● Are there any costs to joining the study?
No. The study team will cover all study-related costs including exercise testing, supervision, transportation, and parking for study-related visits.
● Why should I join this study?
Your participation will help answer important questions that many head and neck cancer survivors have about exercising after treatments. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that in the long-term, patient care can be improved.
● What are the potential benefits of participating in this study?
When lifting heavy weights, you may experience improvements in muscle strength and physical function, body composition, and/or mental health. However, we are not sure if this is possible and helpful for people who have recovered from head and neck cancer.
● What are the risks in taking part in this study?
You may experience side effects from participating in this study. It is possible that some people will experience muscle soreness and fatigue following the exercise testing and heavy lifting strength training exercise sessions. This type of response is normal when beginning a new exercise program, will go away after a few days, and generally poses no threat to health.
During and immediately after the exercise assessments, it is possible to experience abnormal blood pressure, light-headedness, muscle cramps or strains, and in very rare cases (1 per 20,000 in testing facilities), heart rhythm disturbances or heart attack. Although these are rare, such risks of exercise must be acknowledged.
● What are the safety precautions that will be taken in this study?
Exercise sessions will be fully supervised by qualified exercise specialists;
Weights will gradually be progressed;
Heart rate, blood pressure, fatigue, pain, and perceived exertion will be monitored at each session
