Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Heavy Lifting Strength Training versus Usual Care in Head and Neck Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Heavy Lifting Strength Training versus Usual Care in Head and Neck Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial
The LIFTING 2 Study is a research study from the Exercise Oncology Research Laboratory at the University of Alberta, that aims to find out if head and neck cancer survivors (HNCS) are willing and able to complete a heavy lifting strength training program.
The LIFTING 2 Study will also help determine if completing a heavy lifting strength training program has any effects on how participants feel and function.
We will ask some participants to do a 12-week supervised exercise program, while other participants will be asked not to exercise for a 12-week period. We will compare the 2 groups on different fitness and health-related outcomes.
There is no guarantee that exercise will provide any direct benefits to study participants. However, the exercise program may improve quality of life, physical function, and increase muscle mass and strength. Additional research will be planned to more fully test the effects of a heavy lifting strength training program in HNCS, and improve patient care.
The LIFTING 2 Study was granted approval by the Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta Cancer-Committee: HREBA.CC-24-0021
This website provides information for potential and existing LIFTING 2 Study participants.
Potentially eligible participants will be identified via the Alberta Cancer Registry and sent a letter in the mail, where they can contact the study coordinator for further information and recruitment, if interested in participating.
